5 reasons why the kids section of local libraries is the best
Libraries play a fundamental role in society. By offering access to information and knowledge, they play a crucial role in promoting literacy and lifelong learning within the community. Local libraries offer a wide range of resources that can be used by everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. They are a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the community.
And this all starts when we are kids.
The love of reading starts young. In fact, it begins even before kids can read on their own. When they’re in your lap, shared reading is a perfect way to snuggle up and bond while also introducing them to the world of stories, language, and friendship.
Here are Some of our reasons why the kids section of local libraries is the best:
1 They are free. Local libraries are free to the public. This means that anyone can go in and enjoy the resources they have to offer without spending any money. This is great for families who are looking for cheap or free activities for kids. The kid's section of local libraries often has toys and sometimes even computers with children's games that they can play with.
2. They have a variety of books. Local libraries typically have a wide variety of children's books. This means that kids can find something they are interested in reading. whether it is a picture book, a chapter book, or even a non-fiction book, local libraries usually have it. They also often carry multiple copies of popular titles so that everyone who wants to read them can check them out.
Ryeson's interest in bugs came from looking at educational books about bugs from the local library. Each week he would pick out different early reader books about ladybugs, spiders, ticks (yup), and beetles and have my husband and I read to him at night. He would ask a million questions, as kids do, and then want to search for bugs the next day.
3. Not just books! They have a variety of materials - Local libraries typically have a wide selection of items available for checkout, including books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks, magazines, and more. Some even have toys and games that can be checked out! This gives parents and children alike plenty of options to choose from when looking for something new to play, read or watch.
4. They offer events and programs. In addition to having materials available for checkout, many local libraries also offer regular events and programs for kids. These can include story times, crafts, movie nights, book clubs, singing, dancing and fitness classes, and more. This provides a great opportunity for kids to socialize and learn new things in a fun and safe environment.
When Ryeson was three years old we tried out a few toddler yoga classes. While he wasn't able to sit still at any of them, he did have fun with the gymnastics part of the classes. We also went to a few dance classes as well, singing and dancing to 'Baby Shark' at the top of our lungs while dancing and giggling will be a memory I have had for a long time.
5. They are quiet places to study or read. Libraries are generally very quiet places, making them ideal spots for kids who need somewhere calm to do homework or read. Even if there aren’t any specific events or programs going on at the moment, simply being in the library can be a soothing experience away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Most libraries offer free WIFI and computers so kids can get homework done when not at school, or at home. This is especially important in areas where access to reliable internet is hard to get, or too expensive for households.
6. They are safe. In addition to being quiet, libraries provide a safe and comfortable environment for children to explore and learn. The staff at library branches that serve children are highly trained and experienced in working with young people.
7. Perhaps most importantly, local libraries promote literacy and love of learning in kids of all ages. From early childhood through adolescence and into adulthood, using the library regularly can help instill a lifelong love of reading and knowledge.
These are just some of the many reasons why the kids section of local libraries is the best. Libraries help shape the new ideas and perspectives that are central to a creative and innovative society. And now that we are getting back out there, I hope to see more people utilizing this valuable resource again.
